Dear Friends,

I have now been at the Seminary for two weeks.  This has been amazing, inwardly stretching, sometimes deeply moving, as well as just plain hard work!

Our morning course last week was made up of enlightening presentations from the second year students on a book of plays by Rudolf Steiner called the Mystery Dramas.  Each presented a character in the book.  Daunting exercise.....  This week we had a class on Body, Soul, and Spirit, as well as one on Goethe’s World View.  We also had a class giving us guidance for building a relationship to the Call - what is this, where will it take me??? And a beginning to looking at Prayer.  To balance this out we have speech and Eurythmy classes, as well as an art course.  Very full!!!!!

The church community in Toronto has been very welcoming and I’ve met some very nice people.  At Michaelmas their choir provided wonderful music to accompany the service.  The church is very beautiful with wonderful acoustics.  We have a service everyday except Saturday and Wednesday.  On Monday we have the service in German - a different experience of the service for me.  It has been wonderful to live with the Sacrament so regularly.  I will have server orientation on the 20th and then join the server rotation.

During the coming week, the first year students will give their presentations on the theme Reincarnation and Karma.  We have all been given lectures to present on. I have been working on A Western Approach to Reincarnation and Karma.  This study encompasses an historical view, where it can be seen in modern times, and Rudolf Steiner’s insights - Christ as the central figure in Karma and Destiny.  

Sometimes I still can’t believe I am at the Seminary.  I am so grateful to have this chance to deepen my relationship with the Christian Community.  I will post again soon!  Erica

Mt. Buchanan
Dear Friends,                      
Here is my first post to share about my Seminary journey.  Before leaving for Toronto I decided to drive with my husband into the mountains to gather my thoughts for my first presentation in my class.

During a lecture in Dornach, 1st November 1915,   Rudolf Steiner said, ‘Compressed into a few brief words, this is the truth that can inspire us as a source of strength: “The Mystery of Golgotha itself reveals that it must be understood spiritually, that we must seek for Christ as Spirit.” And then we must also say: “Christ is seeing us, Christ is perceiving us.”’

Christ is seeing us, we are being seen.  When I feel truly seen, I feel that someone truly knows me.  In the lecture series entitled ‘From Jesus to Christ’, Steiner describes how Christ is directly involved with our destiny.  This has filled me with such gratitude.  Who better to work with my destiny than Christ the Teacher, the Healer, the Saviour - He who sees me!  I have no idea where this new part of my destiny at the seminary will lead me, or for how long, or what will happen along the way... but I can hold the words - “Christ is seeing us.”

It is in us to give.


I am a bit slow this year in presenting the Chinese symbol for the new year.
This is the Year of the Pig. The Pig is the last symbol in a 12 year cycle, then it begins again. For many cultures, the beginning of the new year is prepared for by the giving of gifts, paying off debts and a thorough house cleaning, so that the new year can begin fresh.
Now, contrary to what one normally may think of a “pig”, in Chinese symbology the pig represents generosity.
This can invite a great deal of introspection, asking oneself, “What can I give? And to whom?” This can also tie into the theme for Lent and Passiontide.
It’s an interesting thing that giving and receiving can be reciprocal. If one is fortunate to receive something, it can often inspire that person to give something, and it goes on.
I would like to present a very recent experience in my family:
My son the former baker, whom I have mentioned before, was suddenly and unexpectedly confronted with a life and death health issue last November. The only solution was a bone marrow transplant. In Canada, the donation of blood and stem cells is voluntary. It truly is a gift of life. He had to have weekly transfusions of blood and platelets while waiting. A matching donor had to be found, and the procedure lined up, which involved a week of chemotherapy, and will involve many weeks of recovery. Provided all goes well, he will have a new lease on life. You cannot imagine the deep feeling of gratitude I have to this unknown donor, and to all the staff at the hospital.
This is an extreme example, of course. A gift can be big or small, simple or complex. It can be a simple act of kindness. It can be to someone you know, or to a complete stranger. It can be a small gift to be appreciated in the moment, or something greater for the future.
Our church also received a very unexpected gift of a beautiful piano, out of the blue, by a Chinese gentleman who lives nearby. He is not connected in any way to the church, but wanted to donate the piano somewhere it would be appreciated. It was close, coincidentally, to the Chinese New Year.
The point is, it is in us to give, in whatever way we find meaningful. This applies as well in a larger sense to our beautiful planet. We have spent years thoughtlessly taking everything we could out of the earth, and we are now seeing the consequences. We have to work harder at learning how to work with nature, and the weekend workshop in North Vancouver at the end of March with Tanis Helliwell, will hopefully address this issue. If you cannot make it, check her out online. She has given workshops in many parts of the world.
Spring is just around the corner – a time of renewal – and a time for new things. Let’s see what each of us can do.

Dear Friends,
Some people in our congregation have kindly expressed interest in my trip to the Balkans and Italy this past month. This trip, my first to Europe, came about because my friend, Stephanie Georgieff, is currently working with the Peace Corps in Albania. You may be a little familiar with her research and subsequent publication of a book on the Black Madonna. When she completes her stint with the Peace Corps, she is planning a walk along the Camino de Santiago, focusing on the Black Madonna. Below is her youtube channel, and blog for the Camino trip.

She is also taking advantage of her time in Albania to research and delve into the history, and particularly the development, of religion in the Balkans. Below you will find some excerpts from the lectures she has prepared so far, which one day she hopes to publish in a book, as well.
It was a whirlwind trip, with only two full days in each country of Italy (Ravenna), Greece (Thessaloniki), Albania (Berat) and Macedonia (Ohrid). As such, I can only give my impressions as a tourist, and it was a very wonderful thing to have my own “private tour guide.” One Sunday, I will bring some maps to talk about our journey.
One of the first things I did upon my return was to attend the last lecture by Rev. Bastiaan Baan, on the redemption of evil. It was a very wonderful lecture, and resonated particularly with me, having just returned from our exploration of Byzantine art, culture and religion. I hope perhaps someone might consider posting some notes on our blog of this enlightened weekend workshop, which is particularly apropos for our time.
My trip was almost two years in the planning, once I knew Stephanie was going to be in Europe, as we had always hoped to do a trip together. I’m pretty sure that my mom, who blessedly passed in February, came along, too, and helped smooth our travels. It’s interesting, too, that some of the things I talked about in my last blog a year ago, came up again on this trip, in Stephanie’s lectures, and also in Rev. Baan’s.
Here are the excerpts from Stephanie’s lectures:

The first evangelization and Christian communities outside of Palestine were in the Balkans in Albania, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey.

When we combine all that we know about Paul, his birth, his conversion, his becoming a new human, as he proclaimed the message and impulse of the Christ, that we are all to become anew, we are to transubstantiate ourselves and the earth, to marry faith and knowledge into a new form of thinking that will enable us to strive towards wholeness, it is fitting that he was born and worked in the Balkans. Paul helped weave both east and west into his evangelization and example, it is appropriate that he was from the Balkans and evangelized in the Balkans as the geographic location of the “bridge.” His ministry is truly the bridge leading up to the 6h Epoch, where the Christ Impulse will be fully taken up by Humanity.

The famed Saints Cyril and Methodius are claimed by the entire Balkan region. For our purposes, we will say they are Macedonians since they are said to have been born in Thessaloniki, a Macedonian city that was never conquered by any other nation state during the time of their births. They were born to a Byzantine official and a Macedonian Mother, and were fluent in Greek and Macedonian. Upon the death of their father, they were sent to be educated in Constantinople, and later were sent in 860 by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III and Photius, Patriarch of Constantinople to be missionaries in the ancient Kingdom of the Khazars. Cyril and Metodi came out of the Dionysian tradition. It was also commissioned for the brothers to develop an alphabet for the Slavs, scholars put the probable date at 863. Scholars also argue that St Clement of Ohrid developed the Cyrillic Alphabet in the 890’s. The alphabet in question had its first iteration as the Glagolitic Script, which is the original alphabet constructed by Cyril and Metodi, the modern Cyrillic alphabet derives from this 9th century alphabet

Can it be that this expression of the mystery of humanity is for the new age? The Sophianic Age of Philadelphia? Is this the new fully conscious free approach to conveying the mysteries of the Cosmos for a new era? In many ways, the Slavs seemed to skip the materialism that developed in the West. While the nations of the former USSR and other communist countries are hurtling towards materialism in a frenetic pace, the peoples are questioning the consequences of such practices. Through the trials and oppression of the Ottomans, the Mongols, and through communism and state imposed atheism, the Eastern Church maintained its ancient mystery roots, while the Western Latinized Church developed intellectually and materialistically. While the current mass embrace of materialism has deeply wounded the Slavs since the fall of Communism, there is much that is still there in terms of the soul of the peoples. I am contemplating that the Slavic Cyrillic Alphabet may have been instituted in time so that there could be this mystic, but conscious union between Humanity and the Divine through the word, the Christian Logos, word, alphabet of the future.

Byzantine art is a mutual experience. In Byzantium, people viewed, touched and kissed Icons and in turn the images spoke to them. In Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic traditions, the sacrament of confession is done in front of an Icon, as the Icon is seen as the conduit between the earthly and the spiritual. People prayed THROUGH the Icon, not TO the Icon. Icons were seen as active forces in Byzantine society, seen as protectors and healers brought out and paraded about during festivals and also during times of crisis. The belief in the active power of image is what lies at the heart of Byzantine art and what makes it so different from art produced anywhere else in the world during the first Christian millennium.

A hallmark of Byzantine Churches is the circular dome placed on a square. The dome is symbolic of the chalice of the Last Supper overturned to pour grace on the congregants. The dome is considered a circle of Divinity, uniting with the Earth as symbolized by the square (four elements that make up the Earthly existence, and the Cube is the geometric basis of the globe.) By uniting the circular dome with the square cube, it signifies the cosmic unity with the earth, the meeting of Divinity and Earthly Humanity

Hagia Sophia means Holy Wisdom, it is significant that a Christ mosaic was in the top of the dome of the cathedral, his rays pouring downward to the community of Christians below. The Lyre of Apollo is related to the human brain. As the Lyra constellation is the celestial correspondent of the Cathedral, it is as if the cosmos through Christ was raining wisdom directly into the human brain and heart in this sacred architecture. The dome, as stated above is also symbolic of the chalice, the grail, where the transformation of matter through the sacrament of the Eucharist occurs. The Dome is the overturned Chalice that pours the grace of transformation, transubstantiation, the facilitating of the deification of Humanity. By this construction, the deification of the congregants, of matter was being witnessed.

CHOOSE LOVE


Dear Friends,
This blog is dedicated to my mom, who has begun her return journey into the world of Spirit. It doesn’t matter how or why it is happening, it simply is her time. The doctors will try to do what they can to keep her comfortable. The most we can hope for is that she will neither suffer nor linger long.
The question now is what can we, her children, do for her or give her. This woman who has always been our rock, the fount of quiet support and endless love, our great teacher, who has grown in grace year by year. This woman who possessed such great faith, she even had her car’s licence plate personalized: 1CN F8H. Many people came up to her and asked her what it meant – see if you can decode it yourself.
We can now only give her our love and gratitude – there is nothing more she would want – except for us not to mourn, but celebrate her passing. Her second husband, with whom she had only a few short joyous years, passed over 30 years ago, and is waiting close by. Other dear ones will be standing by as well.
It’s an interesting thing that Love is the only thing we are allowed to bring with us into the world of Spirit, or heaven. You cannot bring material goods, neither can you bring any negative emotions or feelings: no hatred, no greed, no egotism.
Unconditional love is needed now more than ever, for every single thing, and every single person. For every rock, blade of grass, any thing that flies or hops, and every human being. It’s the only thing that will save us and our planet. What does that mean? It means that we recognize a part of the Divine in everything, just as there is a part of the Divine in ourselves. Yes, dear ones, no matter how much life has beaten you down or told you otherwise, there is a spark of the Divine in YOU! There is something in you that deserves to be acknowledged and recognized and loved UNCONDITIONALLY!
Put down the guns, defuse the bombs, and let’s figure out how to help each other. If we must use technology, let’s use it to help provide food, shelter, and water for those who are in need. Let’s use it to create meaningful work. What we need is a willingness to listen to our hearts, for only there will we hear the Truth.
In the winter, as the stars bend close to the Earth, we are gifted with Love. In the summer, as the Earth breathes out, we can send love and gratitude back into the universe, through our thoughts, words and deeds.
In the Christian Community, with the colors at the altar, we move from the deep red and green of Easter, through red and gold, then gold and white of Whitsun and St. Johnstide. There is a period of 10 weeks before we prepare for the echoing pale green and peach of Michaelmas.
Normally these 10 weeks are celebrated with a lavender and orange combination. This year in particular, however, I have personally felt the need for a different combination – that of lavender and a pale rose. It probably is only because of what I am experiencing with my mom’s journey. Perhaps also because of the words we hear from the Bible during this time of great acts of healing. These colours are represented in the Earth by delicate rose quartz and amethyst. Rose quartz for healing through unconditional love.  Amethyst for connecting with the Divine. When we listen to our hearts with open minds, we can access Divine Wisdom. If we were to go further and connect with our will (represented by the colour of gold) we would then be able to become aware of Universal Consciousness, that is to say, our place and purpose in the Universe. In return, we can become aware of our own destiny and its highest purpose.
We have been given the gift of freedom of choice – each and every one of us. Do we choose love or war? There is absolutely no need for war, except in the name of greed and the lust for power. These represent the lowest impulses of humanity. The Earth herself is in turmoil, and the angels hold their breath, waiting for our collective answer.
For myself, I choose Love.

A World Initiative




A World Initiative
            An early morning intuition after a deep sleep began for me with a very difficult realization: I was at fault. What had I done? The news once again presented me with a frightening picture: A young man with a gun in his hand had cold-bloodily shot another human being. This news was accompanied by a desperate feeling that connected itself to our increasing technology and its effect on youths and on children.
            It is a fact that such a deed is only possible if the shooter has a deep seated feeling of anger, lack of reasoning and tries to get even, by applying his will without any feeling whatsoever for his victim’s future and his own. This could have been avoided by a harmonious upbringing, in peace and quiet. Love and caring for babies, young and older children is lacking in many homes today. It is not realised that this lack shows up in later years. Is it due to technology, to a change in values or to time available among family members? Children of all ages begin to play with technical devices in schools, indeed, already in kindergartens, even in cribs. Ever new ideas appear on the market to fascinate also the youngest. In many families, both parents are required to work full time so that their children are becoming more and more dependent on their cell phones, i-pads etc. It is rare that imaginative story books are read to or by the children. All this turns out to be a restricted way of upbringing. As a result, in many cases thinking is over-activated and trained in the growing child. ***
            It is important to remember that the human I or ego always expresses itself through thinking, feeling and willing. Only a harmonious interaction between these three soul faculties helps the growing person when he or she becomes a young adult. It is necessary that all three soul faculties be developed evenly because they are expected to play their part in later life. As our time has evolved into a technological age, only thinking is required for many school subjects. Google becomes our guide in research projects rather than classroom teaching. A living relationship from human to human has been exchanged for a calculating search tool for finding a goal. This trend continues, of course, in young adults while life in many homes has moved away from gatherings for family meals, from interesting discussions and making music together. In short, what was called quality time, being together, has turned into a social life where most young people are left to their own devices. Many of them watch movies which are either inappropriate for their age or harmful because of portrayed violence. In sports, young people prefer competitive games to cooperative ones, and they are given less opportunities to become physically active themselves because ever more school work is asked of them. So they prefer to watch these games on a screen rather than get out and play them with friends.
             One can observe that another factor enters the picture: thinking, feeling and willing begin no longer to harmonize. Our evolution has entered a time where thinking, feeling and willing slowly separate from each other. Eventually they must be held together by the developing ego or I. Around the twenty-first year this begins to become possible. In the past, this separation of soul faculties did not take place. Each deed of the will was automatically weighed in the light of thinking and the warmth of feeling.
            How can humanity find a solution to this problem? 
            The above-mentioned activities in homes and schools educate only thought-processes on the one hand, and selfish will through competitive school work and sports on the other. This takes place at too young an age. Very important human soul capacities are neglected, especially those that touch on the feeling realm of the growing child and young adult. Just to give some examples: Looking with a young child to find the wonder of life in nature, in exciting forest formations, and to look with awe at changes that take place in ice crystals in a puddle. One can teach a child to have feelings of love when he or she perceives tiny animals and their ways to hide. Observing a snail: how is it moving? Why does it hide in its shell or carry its house wherever it goes? Where does it want to go when it appears? A friend is crying, why? Can we help him? With very comforting words one can create a simple little story so that tears turn into laughter. All this is helpful for a growing child because it develops empathy for others and for the world around. It develops the feeling for others that was missing in the young murderer mentioned at the beginning.
             When a child grows into a youth he will be asked to process and filter information and to think things over. Then it is wonderful when he or she can do this by weighing the facts, with a soul in which thinking, feeling and willing were allowed to develop equally.
            Just a brief mention of Rudolf Steiner’s recommendations for education.[1] The small child should be shown how to imitate the adult in cleaning vegetables or sweeping the floor regularly, in imitating the making of little rolls from bread dough and watching the rising of the dough before baking. All this will gradually develop the will forces in the young child in a healthy way.
             From seven to fourteen their feelings should be touched by descriptive historical stories and biographies of known humanitarians. Also artistic experiences are of paramount importance. Music, painting with watercolours etc.
            After fourteen only, it is healthy to guide the young adult through true, active thinking processes (as distinct from watching a movie passively).
            Only those can fully understand these connections, who have learned from Rudolf Steiner’s books and printed lectures that the harmonious development of the three soul qualities during the first twenty-one years is of paramount importance.
             I will conclude by saying again: As parents or educators we should be aware that the evolution of humanity is coming to an abyss where, in our time, thinking, feeling and willing are beginning to be held together no longer by themselves, as was the case in the past, but have begun to drift apart. This evolutionary change is as yet not fully realized and understood by educators. It is the maturing ego at around twenty-one that will ever more carry in consciousness the responsibility of holding the three soul forces together in our time.
            Returning to my early morning experience, I recall that on waking a frightening picture stood before my eyes: Today’s youths who have had a chance to develop only the cold intellect through over-identification with today’s technology, little or no exposure to the arts, saw too much violence shown on the media, perhaps complicated by social and family trauma, can easily be led into the horrors of student gun violence the world is increasingly faced with it. While identifying only with their hurt, their anger or frustration with life, a gun is used and someone is shot. The thought that others will suffer has never entered their underdeveloped feeling life.
            As a result biographies are destroyed on both sides of the gun. Many years of prison follow for the perpetrator. No judge, educator or psychiatrist, no medical doctor or prison warden is conscious of the fact that the young offender, even murderer, is not really at fault! In his momentary deed, with an undeveloped ego, perhaps never having experienced love, he could not access his feelings of empathy which could have prevented the deed!
             Instead of being helped by society to make up for lost childhood time he is condemned. What should take place is that, in prison outreach, he is placed into a most loving and beautiful environment where he is led to experiences which perhaps have never before touched him. He needs a harmonious and protected environment where he is taught to paint, to make music, so that after a while he too can enjoy artistic and musical experiences which can strengthen him in the realm of feeling.
            This was my experience on waking, and I called friends together to discuss these ideas. What can be done to create awareness in the world today that these young people are victims of an age where there is a lack of faith, love and hope? I was asked by my friends to write a verse which we all could carry and which would create a circle of light around the world, a world which includes all true faiths. We are not alone, and we can be protected, guided and helped to transform.
             Two days later on waking the following verse came to me in English and within a few days later I was able to write it in German.
The Verse Uniting All of Us.
Faith, Love and Hope
Will lead me in my willing
When I light a candle and unite
With the ever-present Love of the Almighty
And His Creative Force.
It works in me when I in love embrace all people[2]
Who come to me with
Faith, love and hope.
This verse may lead us on our path
To create a circle of light around the world.
It will unite us and disperse loneliness.
It will open our minds to imagination,
Strengthen our inspiration,
And bless us with intuition.
